Many afrobeat compilations have been released these last years, all with interesting and varied tracklistings; hits from the golden age, forgotten pearls, essential bands, thematic collections and even electro oriented comps.
On the same period, afrobeat kept growing; after Fela’s death, many emerging bands in the world chose to take on Fela’s legacy and to carry the flame, but also to emancipate themselves from the Black President’s music and rules.
These have been digested in their various influences – even if a strong rhythm basis often remains – to lead to a complex afrobeat tree, made of thousands of bands and multiple branches, all tangled up with other music genres.
That’s what this is all about here: selecting bands and tunes that bring something new to the beat.
